Sources and methods

Every rate on this site is copied from a government publication and links back to it. This page explains which publications, and the rules we follow.

Our rules

  • Published rates only. We never work out a rate from a budget, a levy or a news report. If a rate isn't published yet, the page says so.
  • One source per state. We add a state only when its own government publishes a rate for every town or district. That way every town in a state is held to the same standard.
  • Every figure is linked. Each page names the publication and the date we retrieved it.
  • We say what a rate leaves out. Where some charges on a bill aren't in the published rate, the page lists them.
  • No property records. We don't publish assessed values or owner information. The calculator uses the value you type in, and it isn't stored.
