Mill rate converter
States write property tax rates in different units. Enter a rate in any unit to see it in the others.
| Unit | Value | Used in, for example |
|---|---|---|
| Mills | Connecticut, Michigan, Ohio | |
| Dollars per $1,000 | Massachusetts, New York | |
| Dollars per $100 | New Jersey, Texas, Virginia | |
| Percent | California, and most national comparisons |
The units are the same idea
A mill is one dollar of tax for every $1,000 of assessed value. So 25 mills, $25 per $1,000, $2.50 per $100 and 2.5% are all the same rate.
A rate only tells you the tax when you know which value it applies to. Most rates apply to assessed value, and assessed value is not always market value. Read the guide to rate units.
