The towns whose published rate rose the most over the latest year, in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Carolina, Rhode Island. Revaluation years are left out. A higher rate doesn't always mean a higher bill, because assessments change too.

Why "the rate in this town" is harder in the US

Your property tax bill is several taxes added together. A county, a school district, the town itself, and sometimes a fire, library or utility district each set their own rate. Their boundaries don't always line up with town lines.

In some states, such as New Jersey, the state rolls these into one published rate per town. In others, two houses in the same town can pay different totals because they sit in different school districts. Each state page says which kind of state it is and what its rates include.
